Mother of slain child looking for answers

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) A Connecticut mother whose 1-year-old daughter was stabbed to death this week says she's devastated and searching for answers.

Shakyia Clay says she's frustrated that police haven't told her the details of how her daughter, Zaniyah Calloway, was killed Monday at a relative's home in Bristol.

Clay says she also doesn't understand why someone would stab a child in the stomach. Clay says a female relative at the home was babysitting Zaniyah and her 3-year-old son.

Police charged 36-year-old Arthur Hapgood of Waterbury with murder in the killing. Authorities say Hapgood was Zaniyah's uncle and the stabbing occurred inside Hapgood's mother's home during an argument, while Hapgood apparently was high on drugs.

Hapgood is detained on $2.5 million bail. His public defender declined to comment on the allegations.
