BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) A Bridgeport man is accused of stabbing his pregnant ex-girlfriend after breaking into her home.

Police say Jose Velez stabbed 39-year-old Francis Santos on Saturday night, a day after she sat with her pastor, sisters and Velez and ended a relationship with him.

Investigators say Santos was home with her 8-year-old son when she heard someone breaking into their apartment. Police say Santos tried to run, but Velez attacked her, stabbing her at least twice. Santos was taken to a hospital, where she's in serious condition.

Velez faces numerous charges including first-degree assault, home invasion and risk of injury to a minor. His bond has been set at $500,000.

Police say Velez has a long history of arrests in Connecticut for violent crimes.
