WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Authorities say four people have been arrested after allegedly using counterfeit money at food shops in West Hartford.

Sgt. Samuel Ferrucci says police received reports at around 2 p.m. Sunday that a fake $100 bill had been used at a bakery.

Police then received similar reports from two other shops.

Investigators determined the money had been used at six businesses. They believe the goal was to buy low-cost items and receive real money as change.

Police say they found and confiscated the suspected counterfeit bills.

Police arrested 20-year-old Jason Hayle and 21-year-old Shawn Hayle, of Hartford. They also arrested 20-year-old Andrew McLeod, of Brooklyn, New York, and an unnamed juvenile.

The three adults are facing charges including conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny. It's not immediately known if they have lawyers to comment.
