State panel to probe Ganim campaign petition accusation

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) The State Elections Enforcement Commission will investigate former Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim's campaign for his old job after a city resident complained he did not sign a petition for Ganim's candidacy.

The Connecticut Post reports the panel unanimously approved Friday an investigative subpoena to the Ganim campaign.

Ganim's team says the campaign worker who collected the signature and other pages was fired July 28. R. Chris Meyer, a lawyer for Ganim's campaign, said ``a possible bad apple'' may have signed the voter's name.

Ganim is seeking a comeback after serving seven years in prison for corruption. He's challenging Mayor Bill Finch, who narrowly won the endorsement of local Democrats July 21 in his bid for a third term.

The Ganim campaign said it's checking to determine if other names were fabricated.
