East Hartford gas station explosion caused by car accident

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) Officials say an out of control vehicle was responsible for an explosion and subsequent fire at an East Hartford gas station.

Police say the incident started around 11:40 a.m. Thursday when a car was rear-ended at a nearby intersection and was sent hurtling through a Wendy's restaurant parking lot before crashing into a Main Street gas station.

The vehicle collided with the middle pump at the Phillips 66 gas station, sparking an explosion that sent flames high into the sky.

A witness says the driver of the vehicle may have accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake following the initial impact.

No injuries were reported.

Ernie Hutt, owner of a nearby restaurant, called the incident the ``Miracle on Main Street.''
