Connecticut man charged in hit-and-run that killed student

EXETER, R.I. (AP) - A Connecticut man has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a Community College of Rhode Island student in Exeter.

Police say 26-year-old Jeremy Filippo of Voluntown, Connecticut, turned himself in Sunday. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with death resulting in the crash that killed 20-year-old Christian Costigan of Exeter.

Police say Costigan was walking with friends on the north shoulder of Route 165 on Friday night when he was struck. He died at the hospital.

The college says Costigan was studying music.

Filippo allegedly fled the scene toward Connecticut after the crash.

He was released Sunday on $10,000 bond. It wasn't immediately known if he has an attorney.
