Teen who shot, paralyzed man at party gets 20-year sentence

LITCHFIELD, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut teenager who paralyzed a man when he shot him over a "trivial disagreement" at a house party has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The Republican-American reports that 18-year-old Dante Fanali was sentenced Tuesday in connection with the shooting in Goshen last August that put 27-year-old Alfredo Castillo, of Torrington, in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

The Stamford teen had pleaded guilty in April to first-degree assault and evidence tampering.

Prosecutors say the dispute started when Fanali taunted Castillo. Castillo then tossed a pizza box and Fanali pulled a gun. He pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't fire. He pulled the trigger again, hitting Castillo in the neck.

Castillo was forgiving in court, saying "I can't say he is a bad person."
