Manchester man to serve 115 years for rape, fatal beating

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Manchester man has been sentenced to serve 115 years behind bars after he was convicted of raping and beating a neighbor to death before setting her apartment on fire.

Judge Hunchu Kwak said 23-year-old Steven Durdek "forfeited his right to live in society" before sentencing him to nearly two life sentences Tuesday in Hartford Superior Court.

Durdek was convicted of murder, first-degree sexual assault, first-degree arson, first-degree burglary and tampering with evidence in May.

Police say Durdek broke into 56-year-old Sarah Kelloway's apartment in January 2014 through a third-floor window, raped her and then fatally beat her. Durdek then doused her apartment in lighter fluid and set fire to the residence to cover up his crimes.

Prosecutors say DNA taken from a doorknob placed only Durdek at the scene.
