NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) An animal rights group is accusing Yale University of negligence in the deaths of 33 animals in research laboratories and wants federal officials to fine the school at least $60,000.

Stop Animal Exploitation NOW filed a complaint Monday with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Ohio-based group's executive director, Michael Budkie, told the New Haven Register that Yale isn't following basic animal treatment guidelines.

Yale spokesman Tom Conroy says the school properly self-reported the animal deaths and its programs meet or exceed federal standards.

Government documents show the lab incidents included a dog dying when an oxygen tank malfunctioned, 17 hamsters dying after a lab worker failed to perform a morning assessment of the animals and 15 mastomys, which are rodents, dying after being given an oral vaccine.
