The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is urging drivers to watch for turtles crossing roads during nesting season, which runs from May through July. State wildlife officials say many female turtles are moving across roads to find places to lay eggs, putting them at risk of being hit by vehicles. Drivers are being told to help turtles cross only if it can be done safely and to always move them in the direction they were already traveling. Residents are also reminded not to collect wild turtles as pets as the loss of adult females can seriously hurt turtle populations.
